The cell wall of a microbe is about as thin as a soap bubble. This type of antimicrobial technology is commonly referred to as non-leaching because it doesn’t come off the surface to work. There are other antimicrobial products that have tried to mimic the antimicrobial technology in Coating Specialists products. All of these me-too products fall short in their ability to create the stable silane molecule that is the fundamental component of water-based, non-leaching antimicrobial products. As a result, these me-too products deliver clumps of silane molecules or, “microbial defenders”, to the surface leaving some areas unprotected from the growth of harmful bacteria, mold, fungi and algae. Essentially the antimicrobial barrier left behind by these types of products looks like Swiss cheese. Even worse, some copy-cat technologies try to stabilize the silane molecule by using additives that actually act as food for the microbes you are trying to destroy. What does this all mean to you? Common leaching antimicrobial products use heavy metals, such as silver or copper, to essentially poison microbes. In order for this to work some of that heavy metal or poison must come off the surface each time it destroys a microbe, leaving behind less antimicrobial effectiveness and introducing heavy metals into the environment.
